sitecore - Error when requesting siteroot when anonymous access removed -

we have created site needs have of pages locked downwards anonymous users. pages should able access are:

login reset password account validation page not found privacy policy t & cs

the startitem of website has been set "/home" of other pages included allowed anonymous access below.

this node has had "extranet\anonymous" read removed , allow read access of specific pages want them have access to.

what have found if request url such as: www.domain.com/page-i-cant-get-to sitecore redirect url set in loginpage attribute on site, correct.

however if request www.domain.com error saying "the layout requested document not found.

if login, go same url, fine.

i've stepped through executerequest pipeline , have found when requesting www.domain.com/page-i-cant-get-to context.item null, it's passed handleitemnotfound(args) method.

if request root page, set root sitecore node id {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111} , passes on handleitemnotfound , handlelayoutnotfound(args)

i tried using "requirelogin" attribute, can access loginpage , not of other pages want allow anonymous access to.

i have tried changing startitem login page, urls pages in wrong structure.

is able shed lite on how should done?

why don't seek leaving anonymous user read permission on home item , deny pages(items) want block?
